Character and Rigs

The Youtube playlist "Character and Rigs" (german version) covers processes around importing, rigging and animating character meshes in Unreal.

SketchFab Model to Unreal Engine 5.3 in 8 minutes: Auto-Rigging, Import, Texture in Unreal Lyra

Video

We import a SketchFab FBX model into ActorCore's AccuRig, import it into Unreal Lyra and use the animation of the UE5 mannequin.

AccuRig is currently the fastest and easiest way to import any (humanoid) model with a UE4 rig into Unreal - the new method "Retarget pose from Rig" then allows you to use the animations of the UE5 mannequin in real time.

Hints

  • Install Auto-Setup and AccuRig first
  • AutoSetup is a plugin that must be copied into your Engine Plugin directory and then activated in Unreal under Plugins

Unreal Game Animation Sample - Adding your custom Mesh from Sketchfab in 13 minutes

Summary

In this video we take the newly release Game Animation Sample project and extend it with our own character meshes using a model of Yenneefer of Vengerberg

Why is that interesting? The Animation framework here is quite more complex and powerful than the old one and will undoubtly be standard for all later Unreal projects. It makes a lot that we currently use obsolete and should be a thing everybody has a look into.

  • The Game Animation Sample is a new approach to animate character locomotion
  • It essentially combines approaches we saw starting with Unreal Lyra to a real time animation framework that is setup to be the new animation standard in Unreal
  • It comes with 500 animations that are dynamically selected and combined depending on the characters movements and environment
  • The standard Skeletal Mesh is now the SKM_UEFN_Mannequin from the Unreal Editor for Fortnite
